Nestled in the heart of Marlborough’s famous wine region resides one of New Zealand’s iconic family owned wine estates, where the entire process from vine to wine takes place organically, onsite. This is Hans Herzog.
The estate is the life work of Therese & Hans Herzog, Vigneron’s from Switzerland who found the perfect terroir and climate in beautiful Marlborough to establish their vineyard and artisan boutique winery. Together with a unique team of individuals who share the same values: a passion for wine and food, commitment to excellence and quality, and a love for the great New Zealand environment they created a wine lovers paradise with a world-class restaurant, casual Bistro and vineyard cottage.
With some of the countries most treasured wines, delicious food, stunning grounds, a beautiful tasting room, extensive tours, Hans Herzog Estate is a must-visit for food and wine lovers!
As the name suggests, Hans Herzog’s roots lie in Switzerland where the family has grown wine since 1630. There Hans and Therese owned the successful ‘Taggenberg’ wine estate and Michelin star rated restaurant in the Zurich wine country.
Lured by the arid sandy and gravelly soils on the south banks of the Wairau river in Marlborough - one of the sunniest and driest climates in New Zealand they planted an 11.5 hectare vineyard in the mid 1990’ and later moved the winery and Michelin-starred restaurant.
Here Hans, unfettered by commercial considerations, has adopted an experimentalist stance, cultivating an eclectic array of 28 varieties, including the rarely see in this region Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot for his iconic ‘Spirit of Marlborough’, Montepulciano, Arneis, Barbera, Tempranillo, Nebbiolo and Zweigelt - as well as the more traditional Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
