Real elegance, power, sumptuousness, immensity, and emotion is transmitted by tasting this nectar.

Vintage 2010+

Another great season where Marlborough basked under blue skies throughout summer with wonderful warm weather. The long ripening season culminated in a beautiful Indian summer, perfect for our mighty Montepulciano where no cost and time is spared to bring out the essence of this famous, late ripening Italian grape variety. We normally pick the Monte around Hans’ birthday on the 9th April. Yields are kept extremely low at tiny 500g per vine to achieve perfect physiological ripeness for natural concentration, complexity and an impressive flavour profile.

Hans' Winemaking Comment+

'After long, wild yeast fermentation to enhance the dark colour and intense flavours, the wine was transferred and subsequently aged for 30 months in partly new French oak barrels, on its fine lees. Bottled without fining or filtration to retain the beautiful aromas and flavours.'

Tasting Notes+

Warning - not for the faint hearted! A heady nose, displaying aromas and flavours of red and black berries, with dark chocolate and chilli underpinned by liquorice and savoury overtones. A complex blend of intense ripe fruit enveloped by soft tannins. Voluptuous, smoky and robust this wine will age gracefully over the next 15 years.

Tasted from a 750ml on 24.9.2024: Unbelievably fresh and smooth for a 14-year-old wine. Velvety tannins glide over the palate, with notes of spice, dark chocolate, toffee, and ripe blackberries. You have to taste it to believe it, the Methuselah will feel like a baby in comparison!

Food Matching Suggestions+

All our wines are dry and never over extracted. Sommeliers love them for their ability to easily match with many different foods. Such a powerful wine loves of course hearty dishes but is as lovely to sip and relax at the end of the day - working wonders as a natural sleeping pill...
