Regular price $84.00 Sale

500 years of Pinot winegrowing heritage and 50 years’ experience crafting it, peak in one of the most magnificent but understated Pinot Noirs of New Zealand. Hans’ experience with this variety makes for a powerful and rich portrayal of Burgundy’s greatest varietal. Striking aromas with Hans’ signature purity and silky texture. Matured in the finest French oak barriques for 18 months and matured for 3+ years in bottle before it is released. One for the ages.

Vintage 2017+

Flowering of this early ripening grape variety happened during a period of cooler temperature with rain, resulting in a poor fruit set but enormous concentration. The following warm growing season with some high temperatures in January culminated in an unusual early vintage. We handpicked this Pinot at an extremely tiny yield of 400g per vine. That’s less then one of the lowest for grand cru burgundy, where a maximum yield of 35 hl/h (or 500g per plant, source JR) is specified for Le Musigny. Unparalleled, pure, physiological ripe grapes from our 22 years old vines.

Hans’ Winemaking Comments+

Grapes of amazing flavour concentration were carefully destemmed with 10% whole bunches left. The pure fruit was allowed a long cold soak for a soft extraction of the flavours and colour. Not influenced by cultured yeast, addition and enhancements, the long, cool wild fermentation shows a true expression of the grape variety and terroir integrity. After 24 days on the skins, the young wine was gently pressed and transferred into French Allier barriques (20% new) for the malolactic fermentation. With 24 months in barriques, a contender for a long life. Bottled in our winery, unfined (vegan) and unfiltered to retain the integrity of this magnificent Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes+

With less than the yield for a Grand Cru, this dark, richly textured Pinot shows off with intense, luscious aromas of dark fruit, violet and warm spices. Magnificent blend of allure and complexity, deep and earthbound. Sumptuous and silky structure with a savoury acidity. In the style of Burgundy’s greatest varietal: refined elegance, defined with an ample finish, highlighting its aging potential. A great addition to a Burgundy lover’s cellar. Dec 22.

Bob Campbell - 95 points

Deeply scented pinot noir with intense cassis, dark cherry/berry, vanilla and classy French oak flavours. Bright, youthful wine with power and energy. Accessible now but with good cellaring potential.
